How To Answer The Question In Job Interviews, "What's Your Current Salary?"

Actually, my advice to anyone who wants to

know how to respond if this topic comes up in your job interview is, don’t screw around with this question。 Don’t try to do anything cute or

clever with how you respond。 It’s a very straightforward question that you need

to answer in a straightforward, factual way with potential employers。 So if

asked about your current salary, there’s not much to think about how to

respond。 Here’s why。

If you reach the offer stage of a new jobopportunity, many companies (especially the established, very good ones) willask you to show them a payroll slip or bank statement to verify your previoussalary.

For employers, this isn’t an outrageous request。 It’s just a standard part

of their hiring process for candidates。 So whatever you tell an interviewer

about your salary situation needs to be consistent with whatever documents that

you may be asked to produce later on。

You can imagine what happens if you’ve told

someone earlier in the interview process salary information that’s not true。

Basically, you’re dead。

We’ve seen candidates have to give up very attractiveopportunities at the offer stage because they couldn't produce any proof of thesalary figure they claimed earlier.

In some cases, the candidate will just

disappeared。 In others, they’ll try to turn the situation around and question

the employer’s business practices。 They’ll express their shock that a company

is requesting such information from them, like “How dare you!“ As if

they’re insulted that the employer doesn’t completely trust them。 Their overly

dramatic reaction, however, never works。 Because for most candidates, this

request for a payroll or bank statement is no big deal。 It’s easy for them to

produce。

In both cases, the new opportunity blows

up。 Bye-bye! They can’t escape the fact that they inflated and falsely claimed

what they currently make, which raises big questions about their integrity。 The

irony is that in most of these cases my recruitment firm has seen, our client

liked the candidate a lot and would have likely met their salary expectation if

only he hadn’t lied。

In China, many people receive a lower base

salary, but then get various allowances, benefits, or expense deductions

instead。 In such cases, just share what these are。 Employers know that many

companies here use different ways to minimize the benefits they need to pay out

to employees。 So just be transparent and specific about your current

compensation situation。

Listen, a potential employer may not ask

you for proof of your current salary。 The thing is, you never know。 Your

interview process with a potential employer can be going great。 You really want

the opportunity。 And then very suddenly and casually before the offer stage, they

say, “By the way, could you please send us a copy of a monthly payroll or bank

statement? It’s just part of our hiring practice。”

So unless you like gambling with yourfuture and ability to join good companies, be straightforward and accuratewhenever you talk to an employer about your current salary.

And if you really

want your next employer to give you a big increase over what you make now, do

what people who are able to achieve this do。 Impress the hell out of them

during your job interviews!
