至於出生年代，姚瑩在《康輶紀行》中說她是北魏孝文帝至宣武帝時人；宋翔鳳的《過庭祿》中則說她是隋恭帝時人，程大昌的《演繁露》中則說她是唐初人。而根據北朝民歌《木蘭辭》（又作《木蘭詩》）等等的描述，對於花木蘭的歷史年代問題，目前有兩種主要的民間說法是：
第一種說法是：北魏太武帝年間，花木蘭替父從軍，參加了北魏破柔然之戰，木蘭多次參與了北魏出擊大漠兵伐柔然的戰爭，且表現突出，但卻無人發現她是女子。戰爭結束後，朝廷欲授予她尚書郎，被她婉言拒絕。
第二種說法是：這種說法來自於清朝褚人獲的小說《隋唐演義》。隋恭帝義寧年間，突厥犯邊，木蘭女扮男裝，代父從軍，征戰疆場多載，屢建功勳。後與竇線娘交戰被擒，線娘驗明她女性身份，與之結為姐妹。
竇建德兵敗，線娘請花木蘭送信給羅成，木蘭途中回鄉探望父母，不巧被可汗得知花英雄為女兒身，要招其入宮。花木蘭將書信交於妹妹花又蘭，託她代為送信後自刎身亡。（《隋唐演義》第56、57、60回）
花木蘭最早出現於南北朝一首敘事詩《木蘭辭》中，該詩約作於南北朝的北魏，最初收錄於南朝陳的《古今樂錄》。僧人智匠在《古今樂錄》稱：“木蘭不知名。”長300餘字，後經隋唐文人潤色。
巾幗英雄花木蘭雕像明代文學家徐渭將《木蘭詩》改編為《雌木蘭替父從軍》，劇中自稱“妾身姓花名木蘭，祖上在西漢時，以六郡良家子，世住河北魏郡。俺父親名弧字桑之，平生好武能文，舊時也做一個有名的千夫長。
”自此，木蘭的父親叫花弧，姐姐叫花木蓮，弟弟叫花雄，母親是花袁氏。清代《曲海總目提要·雌木蘭》也說：“木蘭事雖詳載古樂府。按明有韓貞女事，與木蘭相類，渭蓋因此而作也。木蘭不知名，記內所稱姓花名弧及嫁王郎事，皆系渭撰出。”
祖沖之《述異記》、李亢《異志》皆提到木蘭姓花。一說為木蘭本姓朱，清康熙年間的《黃陂縣誌》曰：“木蘭，本縣朱氏女，生於唐初，……假男子代父從軍，……至今其家猶在木蘭山下。”
焦竑在其《焦氏筆乘》中也說道：“木蘭，朱氏女子，代父從徵。今黃州黃陂縣北七十里，即隋木蘭縣。有木蘭山、將軍冢、忠烈廟，足以補《樂府題解》之缺。”但有木蘭是姓魏的說法，也有一說為木蘭姓韓。另據《新唐書》載：“少女木蘭，姓任”。
